VS2005 Web Debugging in Vista

Friday, 29 December 2006 15:53 by tariq

Had issues debugging a web application on Vista, it kept complaining that Integrated Authentication was necessary. So goggled around and came across this post on Rick's Strahl's blog, and decided to install VS2005 SP1. The VS2005 SP1 setup experience in my case was horrible. it ended up being a memory hog brought the machine down to near halt, and that was just the setup initialization. I would advise folks to run the setup overnight if all they got is 1GB of Ram on their Vista boxes/notebook.

So anyways coming back to Web Debugging on Vista, the first complaint was Windows Authentication which is not installed by default on IIS7. (Oh yes, before anything you need to install IIS 6 Compatibility mode onto IIS7 i.e. Control panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows Features On and Off -> Internet Information Services -> Web Management Tools -> IIS6 Compatibility)

So go to Control panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows Features On and Off -> Internet Information Services -> World Wide Web -> Security -> and Check Windows Authentication.

Vs2005 will then complain that an authentication error occurred when you try to start debugging.

As Rick mentioned VS2005 SP1 is supposed to enable the Web Debugger to attach to ASP.net on the integrated pipeline, but that doesn’t work, the alternative as was pointed in comments on Scot Guthrie’s blog.

Further details; check ScotGu's post and MSDN VS2005 Vista Issues page.

StarUML: Free UML Tool that is Actually Quite Good

Thursday, 28 December 2006 16:30 by tariq

If you want to you can skip the blah blah blah of this post and go get it here is the link - StarUML (pls note workaround to quirky object naming is at the bottom)

Anyways, sometime last week I was looking for a UML modelling tool, and was looking for something that would be easy on the pocket. There is a few sites out there that have listings up of the various UML tools, if you google for them you will find them. Most of the ones that cost $0 weren't impressive at all, and then there was ArgoUml, thats a project of Tigris. I was making do with that since it was the best of the rest at the $0 price mark. Its runs on Java, and did its job, although user interface is a bit kludgy.

Then today a friend of mine asked me if I tried out StarUML. Curious as to how it stacked up against the others I downloaded and I am impressed, to me its much better than Argo. It accomodates for 3 modelling approaches, C# code generation, and has got a snappy interface. The catch that I noticed is that it isnt UML 2.X.

One word of warning! All objects dragged on to the drawing surface by default have a quirky habbit of being name after one of the contributors to the project. The workaround is to delete/or edit the contributors.xml file that is in the installed directory.

Windows Tip - No to All in File Replace Dialog

Friday, 22 December 2006 10:46 by tariq

A really hidden tip for Windows. There has been quite a few times where I have clicked 'No' a couple of hundred times.

But next time I am going to hold down 'shift' when I click that no button.

Infrared Xray Machine

Thursday, 21 December 2006 16:34 by tariq

This is cool,

That is actually an 'xray' (although it has nothing to do with x-rays) of that dude's wrist. It is showing all his major blood vessels and muscles, and it mainly involves an infrared beam.

The obvious medical implications of this tech is amazing. Just imagine if this was available the last time I was at the hospital, I wouldnt have been pierced in the wrong place for a drip treatment.

Download Managers - A spyware review

Wednesday, 20 December 2006 14:50 by tariq

There is quite a few of them out there, GetRight, FlashGet, Download Accellerator just to name a few, but did you know which of them come bundled with Spyware.

They guys at Safer Networking (makers of Spybot) do, and have written a brief review.

My long time favorite has been Getright, for no reason in paticular, just that I've been using it from since it was one of the only few that were out there. Nice to know they have cleaned up their setup.

Vista doesnt like my Notebook

Friday, 15 December 2006 12:04 by tariq

Yeah, had a struggle late night, and have come to the conclusion that Vista doesnt like my notebook(Dell Inspiron 6400). To be precise it prefers me to stick with Windows XP Home Edition, and is reluctant to upgrade it.

The compatibility report was fine, the only Hardware complaints were

- to Upgrade my Bios - i.e. got to A.11 from A.8

The software complaints were

- Nero - which I can do without for the time being

- McAfee Internet Suite - OMG, no compatibilty with McAfee, allright I'll give Avast a try

ofcourse there were others, but those guys up were the initial show stopper.

Once the compatibilty discrepancies were sorted out, I chose to upgrade, a couple of times, the setup wasnt able to copy the files, it went all the way upto 80+% and said something to the nature of files were corrupt.

Allright, maybe there was something wrong with the DVD, so I mounted the ISO directly using a little known tool from Microsoft and ran the setup again. This time copying the files were OK, the setup went all the way to expanding files and then fell over.

Thankfully the rollback is awesome.

I am actually contemplating whether blowing away my XP Home and installing Vista fresh. But reinstalling an OS from scratch is always a pain, and I am not talking about the OS setup, but all that comes after.
